Menopause hit me like a wrecking ball when I hit 47 thanks to a combination of long work hours, stress, divorce, denial, and not actually doing many of the things I knew to do.
I felt fat, frumpy and overwhelmed. I looked middle aged, and felt achy and creaky like an old lady. There were probably only a couple of outfits in my entire wardrobe I looked OK in and there was no photographic evidence of my existence for years.
My children found my hot flushes hysterical. It was off and on with the cardigans all day long - like the hokey- cokey but a lot less fun. Wine o’clock became a coping mechanism, which meant too many compensatory coffees the next day.
I hit rock bottom. It was time to get off my comfortable arse, get my mindset, diet and exercise back on track. I began focusing on me.
I ran a few tests to find out what was going on under the bonnet and started making small but consistent changes each and every day.
I did nothing extreme. I ate regular food, pretty much identical to the food I was cooking for the kids. No kale involved or joining a running club!
Within a couple of months, I had shifted the weight I wanted to and had reversed many of the niggles that had crept in - blood glucose had strayed into the prediabetes range without warning and my blood pressure (which had always been great) was ‘under observation’.
I continued to eat well, exercise and always get a good night's sleep and soon my friends were asking what my secret was.
